Grid Connect Solar Power

If there is one thing we have a lot of in Australia, it’s sunlight. As a source of energy, the sun’s rays are plentiful, easy to access, environmentally friendly and best of all – they are free! Solar power has exploded in popularity in recent years because it is the most cost-efficient and eco-friendly way to provide electricity to your home or business, and it’s probably cheaper than you think.

What is grid connect solar power?

These are five components required for grid connect solar:

  • Solar panels
  • Inverter
  • Switchboard
  • Electricity meter
  • Electricity mains grid

Designed to collect and convert solar energy into electricity, solar panels are mounted on the roof of your business or home. These cells generate energy whenever the sun is shining and – via the grid connect converter – transform it into 240V AC electricity, which is then used to power your premises.

If your grid connect system produces a surplus of electricity, this is fed back into the grid and your electricity retailer credits you about 5¢ per kilowatt hour. In Victoria this will jump to 11.3¢ on the first of July 2017. At times when your solar system is not producing power – for example, at night – your electricity is supplied by the mains power grid and charged at the standard rate.
